#1 piece of equipment

If I could choose only ONE piece of equipment….

The fitness world is swimming with new workout fads, theories, and pieces of equipment constantly. Over the course of the past seven years and the many phases and places this profession has taken me, I have come to the conclusion that if I had to choose only ONE piece of equipment to have with me and recommend to clients…it would be…

….a set of bands (linked HERE).

We are in the age of home workouts and virtual training sessions/classes. Some of us might not have access to a full gym, leaving us feeling like our workouts are lacking. To be completely transparent, although there are a few exercises that are tougher to mimic outside the gym - for the most part, a set of bands allows you to target all muscle groups while also providing varying resistance and intensity.

What is my favorite thing about training with a set of bands, you ask?

Every single exercise we perform consists of two parts, eccentric and concentric…or in other words, the up and the down, the in and the out.

It is very common for most of the focus to be is placed solely on one portion of the movement, like the upward motion of a squat or deadlift, for example. What bands can help us do, is train both parts of a movement, by counteracting the resistance being applied by the outside force (ie. when performing banded tricep extension, it would be easy to allow the band to snap our arm back into place. But, by slowly working against the resistance we are now training both the eccentric and concentric portion of the exercise and adding in an entirely different muscle group).

  • Bands give us the opportunity to get double the benefits from one exercise. How rad is that??

  • Bands provide our mind and body with a great opportunity to connect - neurologically sending signals throughout our desired movement

  • Bands help us develop GREAT habits within our movement patterns that translate across the board

  • Bands require presence, forcing athletes to have an awareness and an understanding of their body (choosing resistance, getting the most out of each rep, etc.)

  • Bands give the availability to train anywhere, anytime

  • Bands can also serve as great prep movements for workouts

You would be surprised at the level of intensity that can be accomplished with simply a set of bands.
