Rest + Recovery

Recovery depends heavily on so many factors and certainly isn’t a one-size-fits-all recipe.

How much sleep are you getting?

What is you training age?

What intensity level are your training sessions?

How do you spend the rest of your time outside of training?

Are you getting enough QUALITY nutrients?

And then there are a whole slew of personal tendencies that play a large role in determining what recovery might look like for you.

It doesn’t always happen this way, but I like to make sure I check in with myself daily so I don’t get all the way to “burn-out.”

If I don’t check in and my mind is in need of a full reset, there’s a high chance my training sessions, climbing sessions, etc. start to get me frustrated: being that my performance usually starts to suffer (to my own standards). It happens quickly, but I realize I am not able to sink into the “flow state” I sam often seek through movement. This is usually a good indicator that it is my MIND that needs to recover a bit.

When I feel weak, muscles are tired/can’t sustain the load/volume I typically ask of them, I feel uncoordinated, movements feel heavy, or maybe my warm up didn’t alleviate some tightness…I have a pretty decent idea that my body is screaming at me to go home and rest!!!

Being that movement is such a huge part of my life, I try and take about 2 days a week, either completely OFF or I try and switch things up a bit: inviting a completely different style of movement into my day.

Rest days and recovery days mean two different things within my lifestyle, but they are both just as equally important.

What does rest and recovery look like for you?

Do you struggle to incorporate them into your programming?
